I don’t know about anyone else, but when I began college one of the biggest shocks was how small the closet was. At home, I had a very large closet and had no problem storing all my clothes, shoes, and accessories. But once I got to college my closet was a third of the size that my home closet was, so I had to learn to adjust to a lot less space. This year my dorm room has a bigger closet than last year (about half the size of my closet at home), so I have a bit more space to work with but these tricks have made my life so much easier. Obviously, college students aren't the only one with unreasonably small storage spaces, and these tips can work for anyone. Here are my storage tips for organizing a small closet to get the most out of any tiny space.
Shoe shelves
A great way to make the most of a small space is by getting a shelf for your shoes. They don't have to take up the entire top shelf (aka room for new shoes!) and you get to keep them all on display.

Hanging shelves
These a perfect for storing things like sweaters and shorts that you don't want to hang up. You get to use fewer hangers, and it allows you see everything rather than just stuffing your clothes in a drawer.

Shower curtain rings
I use shower curtain rings to hang my necklaces. The flower rings I use look decorative, and I can hang two or three necklaces on them and always see them. Plus, they hardly take up any room so the display is totally worth it.

Outfit hangers
When I saw the wonder hanger infomercial I thought they had to be too good to be true (and they are for their advertised purpose). But they are perfect for hanging up outfits. Two or three hangers can fit in each slot so they are perfect for planning outfits for the week. Plus they fold down so they take up way less space.

Use vertical space
All of the tips above utilize the technique of completely taking advantage of as much vertical space as possible. Try to find as many ways to use every inch of vertical space and your small closet will start to feel so much bigger.

I feel your pain- having to adjust to a dorm room closet is awful!! This year my closet is bigger, too and I don't have to crawl and shove myself into my closet to see all my clothes! Its awesome :) When it comes to organizing my closet, I use a couple of different methods. The only things I have hanging up in my closet area are sweaters, button-ups, cardigans, and blouses (and they're all organized by color and style. Yes I am slightly OCD). Every thing else (t-shirts, tank-tops) are folded away in my drawers in a certain way that I can see all of them at once. It's glorious. I also use one of those hanging organizers, but for my flats and sandals.
ReplyDeleteI've always wanted to try those wonder hanger things but I was never sure if they would work for me!

The wonder hangers really aren't very helpful for putting one hanger in each slot and trying to store all your clothes that way; they just dont save that much space. But like I said for outfit planning they are perfect. And they're not that expensive.
DeleteI definitely wish I were better about organizing my clothes by color but I just haven't been able to keep up with it. I do organize by type of clothing though.
Man, I need every single one of these tips!!!! My closet it a WRECK!!!! Eeeeeek! And thank you sooooooo much for your sweet words on my balance post. You are 100% right! Thanks for the reminder!
ReplyDeleteGreat tips! I need a makeover real bad.
ReplyDeleteI organized my closet in nearly the exact same way! I had my shoe thing on top and one of those hanging things in pink!
ReplyDeleteMy closet is about half the size of yours now..I just moved in with roommates. I'm using the space behind my bedroom door as an accessory space, with a door shoe rack, a cork board with hooks for my necklaces, and burlap in a frame for my earrings. I still have a lot to go and will do a blog post once my room is organized because it is definitely small!

It can be so hard to organize a small closet! It sounds like you have great system for organizing accessories. I wish I had a better system for organizing accessories, but because I don't have many it doesn't make much of a difference.
